A lot of homeowners and companies ignore the potential clogging of septic tanks (pozo negro). Without your knowledge, you could be among those homeowners who are not taking care of their septic system. It’s not that you don’t want to, it’s more of thinking that it is difficult to do. But the truth is that there are a lot of simple ways to prevent septic tanks getting clogged. Here are five of them:
- Never treat your toilet as your garbage can. Cigarette butts, feminine napkins, and facial tissues are only among those non-biodegradable materials that can cause clogging of your septic tank. Make sure they are being disposed properly, and not being flushed into your toilet.
- Remove grease on utensils before washing them. Avoid washing utensils with grease in a sink. Instead, remove the grease first using paper. Grease does not only cause clogging on pipes, it also makes it for the soil to absorb liquids.
- Avoid installing septic system near the trees. Roots, especially from huge trees can also cause clogging even before you know it. According to experts, septic systems (especially soakways) should be at least 30 meters away from trees.
- Practice regular maintenance. No matter how careful you are, clogging is always a potential problem. Doing regular maintenance (or hiring someone to do it) of your septic tank is strongly recommended. This will allow you to detect clogging in its earliest stage.
